O❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ wanted to finally make a big field...

  • I had been thinking about one that linked Catalina...
  • making a large field that would be difficult to get to the ends of.
  • However:
  • spoofers be spoofin',
  • and the end result just wouldn't be big enough.

O❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ proposed a few ideas...

After looking at areas of congestion and inquiring about key availability we had an solid first draft for a double nested field.

We then got to work

gathering keys...

+T❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ I'm sure the ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ links are blocking the resistance from building a huge field to the coast from lake havisu and parker. if they go down most of the valley and ventura county will be covered by a field.

Mar, 4

March 5th turned out to be a pretty crappy day...

...so we carried on with our plans.

At s❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚'s suggestion, I❚❚❚❚❚ (L❚ at the time) captured the ❚❚❚❚❚❚ portals. He got there around 3pm, fully deployed on everything and dropped a few keys on the ground for us to pickup later.

I left work at ❚❚:❚❚ and l❚❚❚❚❚❚ drove us to ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚. We had an unfortunate run in with a discarded Home Depot bucket (in the left lane as we were going 80...) and while it further mangled my bumper, when you drive a ❚❚❚❚ you just don't care. We made it to ❚❚❚❚ by ❚❚❚❚.

The main takaway from the trip was...

I suck at long distance driving. l❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ drove the first leg, and I was supposed to drive us back. Shortly after we got back on the ❚❚❚ I started to nod off -- easy to do when there's nothing but joshua trees and stars. When I started babbling about l❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚'s dead grandmother talking to ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ about silverware, l❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ did the only appropriate thing and demanded that I pull over. Turns out I had also been going 60mph in a 75 zone.

❚❚❚❚❚❚ then schooled me: blasting down the ❚❚❚ like some sort of meth-crazed trucker. We got back to LA around ❚❚❚, I rolled into bed and cursed life when I woke up at ❚❚❚ to go to work.

We then headed up to ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚

There we met up with s❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚. He had been farming keys for us from the portals in the area. We exchanged keys and got some intel that spooked us a little. The funny thing about operations like this is that you simultaneosly want everyone to know so they can help, but have to be very careful so information isn't leaked.

As we drove back down to ❚❚❚❚❚, we snapped these pics on ❚❚❚❚❚❚ Beach. The next week would be spent on pins and needles as we all watched the intel map for signs of obstacles as we prepared to build the field.

The Operation

N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ & L❚❚❚❚❚❚

Just before 3:30pm on St. Paddys:

N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ and L❚❚❚❚❚❚ got to work blowing up the large resistance field hubs that linked ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ to ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚. This large field network was the only obstacle east-west that would prevent the link from ❚❚❚❚❚❚ to ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ Once the fields were cleared the link from ❚❚❚❚ to ❚❚❚❚ was dropped down. N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ and L❚❚❚❚❚❚ then moved forward to clear all the remaining blue links to the north blocking the creation of their cap field.

When the links were laid down N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ and L❚❚❚❚❚❚ had the distinction of building the largest Southern California Enlightened field to that point, with a staggering 760,000 Mu!

O❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ assembled a crack team of 7 of our toughest Socal Ea8's: S❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚, the second level 8 player in SoCal and the first who wasn't a Google employee. J❚❚❚❚❚❚ and M❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚, heroes of the Inland Empire, totally willing to drop everything to take out a portal or build a level8 farm hundreds of miles away at a moment's notice, T❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ and M❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ two of the most battle-hardened vets from the Southbay, and Z❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ who was totally willing to be all but abducted to go there. When I saw him at the ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ the Friday before the raid he told me: 'I have no idea what's going on, all I know is that N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ told me I'm being kidnapped all day Sunday for a super secret mission.'

They would then meet up with s❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ who did the key gathering for the Mission and N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚, the first ❚❚❚❚-local EA8. N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ not only had the distinction of being the only local level 8 in the area, but he was also the guy that single-handedly killed the resistance's March 5th superfield. Also I hear the guy brought everbody a bottle of wine, seriously the guy's Ingress's 'astronaut Mike Dexter'.

With the northern links in place all attention turned to Mexico.

Meanwhile, south of the border...

Most of us met for coffee and waffles, then crammed in the car and booked it to the border. The drive went quick and around noon ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ we crossed over into Tijuana.

At around noon we met up with L❚❚❚ in Rosarito. We then drove down to the ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ in ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚. Here is where we hit our first snag.

❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚-❚❚-❚❚❚-❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ $❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚... ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚. ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚'❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚. ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚. ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ (❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚) ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚. ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚'❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚.

We were pretty frustrated, but since we were already there we decided to walk over to the '❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚'

Once there we decided to see if ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚. The plaza sits in the middle of a commercial district, which is surrounded by ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ and ❚❚❚❚❚. e❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ was able to ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚. He quickly captured both portals.

❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ -- boosting them up to level ❚❚❚. Around this time N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ rolled in. With him there we hacked the portals for keys and then hit up O❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ over ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚. "We know it's only 2:30, but our ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ here sucks, can we start the operation early?" He replied that they were obout an hour out from their end of the field, but that we could bump the operation up to 3:30pm.

So this begs the question ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚?...

As we were pretty much locked in a holding pattern e❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ and I decided to wander around the area and start submitting portals for the dozen or so un-portaled monuments in the area. People were getting restless and hungry, so l❚❚❚ suggested a seafood cart over by the plaza. I was waiting for my oysters when the alarm went off telling me to get in position across the street.

This is where things started really taking a turn. ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚. ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚, ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚. ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚, ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚. ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚:❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ -- ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚.

Around 6pm the first link went up from Mexico.

❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚ ❚ ❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚

I had a few invites left, ❚ ❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚. L❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚'s cousin was with us and had gotten fed up with us at this point so he was napping in the car. L❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ woke him up made him sign up for an ingress account. the user name '❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚' was too long so he ended up going with 't❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚'. I dropped my keys for ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚, ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ and ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ on the ground.

EA1 t❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚'s first action in the game was to pick up the keys and ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ link to '❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚'. Probably not the best first ingress experience, but definitely a memorable one.

Just about this time, N❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ dropped the final link creating a 17 million Mu control field. When the field went up the group started shouting so loud that we interrupted the clown show going on next to us. ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚ ❚❚❚

Unfortunately, the final link, the one that would have created a double field failed to go up. This is because, once again we got pwned by great circles. We couldn't see that there was a blocking link near ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚, because both the application and the game use isometric projections to render the links, while the backend logic uses geodesic methods to make them. ❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚ ❚❚❚❚. The mission was complete and it was time for drinks.

❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚❚ & Aftermath

S❚❚❚❚❚❚❚, I❚❚❚❚❚❚ & ???

The Vegas crew had been waiting around for hours after boosting the portal, when they noticed that the post office -- a portal in the middle of a vacant lot -- was coming under fire from a resistance agent who clearly wasn't there. In the end it probably didn't matter much -- Vegasmaize got to Searchlight about 10 minutes later only to see the field he came to take already destroyed. Our international field stayed up for about two hours, but that was two hours in the middle of a busy Sunday afternoon.

Large fields never last very long. Even small fields are usually taken out very quickly. The point of the field wasn't to hold ground but rather to show that it could be done. Before this mission, the So Cal Enlightened was taking repeated beatings from massive resistance raids, at least one a week. Since then it's been pretty quiet. We gained 4 new EA8s from this mission, crossed into another country to make the field, and began a friendship with agents far outside Los Angeles.

Most important, this field was not a flash in the pan -- the Englightened now is more motivated than ever. New agents are hitting L8 every day and when they do they aren't slowing down. I hope you like the color green, because in the future I bet you'll be seeing a lot more of it.
